Captain Isaiah Haden of Hanover and Botetourt Counties

Captain Isaiah Haden

Isaiah Haden first appears in the records of St. Pauls Parish, Hanover County, Virginia in 1771.  He is listed in those records until 1790.  They indicate that he lived on the South Anna River and that his wife was Ann.  He served as a Captain in the Hanover Militia during the Revolution.

An Isaiah Haden appears in the records of Botetourt County in 1794.  Although Botetourt County is all the way across the State to the west, we think this was him for a couple of reasons:

1. A Francis Blunt shows up in the records of Botetourt County in 1799 as a deputy Sheriff and, previously, in the 1785 Hanover County tax list with Isaiah Haden.  Francis Blunt, Sr. (c1755-c1797) and Francis Blunt Jr. (1776-1851) lived in Hanover County.  Francis Blunt, Sr. is probably the person listed in the tax records.  Francis Blunt, Jr. might have accompanied Isaiah Haden to Botetourt County, Virginia.

2. Anthony, Bartholomew and John show up in the records of Botetourt County in 1798-99 as deputy Sheriffs.  Bartholomew (and possibly John) later moved to Wayne County, Kentucky.  In 1836, the Wayne County heirs of "Captain Isaiah Haden" filed a claim for back pay earned during the Revolution.

Furthermore, the trip to Botetourt County may have been fairly easy since both Hanover County and Botetourt County are along the James River.

Deputy Sheriffs of Botetourt County, VA (1798-99)

In 1798, Anthony, John and Bartholomew Haden were appointed Deputy Sheriffs in Botetourt County.  The 1801 marriage record for Bartholomew Haden indicates that Anthony Haden was his brother.

John and Bartholomew Haden move to Wayne County, KY

In 1805, John Haden appears on the records of Wayne County, Kentucky where he is appointed a Deputy Sheriff.  We believe this is the John Haden of Botetourt County because, a few years later, Bartholomew Haden from Botetourt County also appears in Wayne County.  He is accompanied by the family of Anthony Gholson of Botetourt County.

[Martha Mullens Tutt, “Wayne Mullens, 1807-1895, of Wayne County, Kentucky”, p. 86]

There are extensive records regarding John and Bartholomew Haden and the Gholson family.

Wayne County Heirs of Captain Isaiah Haden File Claim for Back Pay

Starting in 1836, the Wayne County heirs of Captain Isaiah Haden filed a claim for back pay earned during the Revolution.  These claims were denied.  Unfortunately, we do not know the names of the claimants.  However, the only Hadens listed in the 1840 Wayne County Census were Bartholomew Haden and the heirs of John Haden.
