Tinian - Bomb Group Housing Areas (South to North)

Housing Areas Along the West Coast of Tinian

The map shows the location of the housing areas for several Groups along the west coast of Tinian, including the 6th Bomb Group.

From "Hellbird Handbook" (462nd BG), p. 19.

The 40th Bomb Group - 58th Bomb Wing

Here is a picture, facing northwest, of the 40th Bomb Group housing.  To the east (right) and across Riverside Drive is the housing area for the 462nd BG.  Note the distinctively shaped officer's club.

The 462nd Bomb Group - 58th Bomb Wing

Here is a map of the housing for the 462nd Bomb Group (the "Hellbirds"), facing east. This housing area is northeast of the 40th Bomb Group housing area above. (Note the distinctively shaped officer's club in the lower right corner of this map.) This layout appears typical of that used by most other Groups (including the 6th). Each of the three squadrons has a separate quadrant and the administrative personnel are in the fourth quadrant. Common areas are along the center.

From "Hellbird Handbook" (462nd BG), p. 18.

The 462nd and 444th Bomb Groups - 58th Bomb Wing

Here is a picture, facing north, of the 462nd and the 444th Bomb Group housing areas.  The 462nd Group is the closest square.  (Note the distinctive officer's club to the left of the first quadrant.)  The 6th and 9th Bomb Group areas are north beyond the white space.

The 6th and 9th Bomb Groups - 313th Bomb Wing

Here is a picture, facing north, of the housing areas for the 6th and 9th Bomb Groups.  This is in the upper part of the picture above.  The 6th Bomb Group housing is the closest square, laid out in the standard quadrant arrangement.  The 9th Bomb Group is the farthest area laid out in a side by side arrangement.

From Smith, "9th Bombardment Group (VH) History", p. 34a.

The 6th Bomb Group

Here is a picture, facing east, of the 6th Bomb Group Housing area.  The tree lines indicate that the Seabees placed the squares into existing "fields".

"Pirate's Log", pp. 36-37.

The 6th Bomb Group housing is different in that all of the officer barracks were in a single area - the lower left quadrant (NW), with some overflow across the Riverside Drive.  The enlisted crew barracks were located in each of the other quadrants, with separate mess halls and operations buildings. The outdoor theatre is to the lower left (SW) and the church is just to the left (N).  The section on Life on the Island shows these areas in more detail.

The 504th and 505th Groups - 313th Bomb Wing

The 504th and 505th Group areas were located somewhere to the east of the 9th Bomb Group area. The 313th Bomb Wing Headquarters is east of the 6th Bomb Group area.

The 509th Composite Group

For comparison, here is the housing area for the 509th Composite Group (the "Atom Bombers").  This area was located to the west of North Field.  Note that the area in the center has "evolved" into a circular area.  The control tower for the North Field may be just below the center.
